SIP Session Initiation Protocol

IP, or Session Initiation Protocol is a foundation protocol formalized by the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) in 1999 by RFC 2543 for initiating, maintaining, and terminating Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) telephone calls and exists on the Application Layer (or Layer 7) of the OSI Model (for additional reading, Wikipedia has a great article on the OSI model here).  SIP can also be used for other applications, such as video calling and text messaging.
