PSAP Public Safety Answering Point

PSAPs (Public Safety Answering Points) receive 911 emergency calls and dispatch appropriate emergency responders (such as fire, police, or medical services) to the location of the emergency. PSAPs are often called "911 Dispatch Centers" and are staffed by personnel certified to provide immediate "over the phone" professional medical coaching to victims and their families prior to the arrival of emergency personnel. The dispatchers are trained to gather critical information from callers who may be experiencing the most traumatic times of the lives and who are often confused, angry, and may not be rational.

911 dispatchers are required to send emergency personnel if you hang up or not able to speak to verify an emergency is not occurring or to render aid.
